C. LTC renewal
The expiration date of a license holder’s LTC can be found on the
front of their license. An original LTC may be valid up to the first
birthday of the license holder after the fourth anniversary of the
date of issuance. However, a renewed LTC is valid up to five years
after the date of the expiration of the previous license. In either
scenario, the LTC will expire on the license holder’s birthday.
See Tex. Gov’t. Code § 411.183.
Typically, the DPS will contact the license holder by mail 60 days
before the expiration of their LTC. However, even if a person has
not received notice from the DPS, their license will still expire and
they must still request a renewal (if they wish to do so). So long
as a renewal applicant is eligible, the DPS must issue the renewed
LTC within 45 days. For that reason, it is prudent to submit renewal
materials no less than 45 days before the expiration. See Tex. Gov’t.
Code § 411.185.
A renewed LTC is valid for five years. An LTC may be renewed
by mail by completing a Form LTC-77 and paying the applicable
fee by money order, personal check, or cashier’s check (note: the
standard fee is $40); or online by visiting: https://txapps.texas.gov/
txapp/txdps/ltc/. See Tex. Gov’t. Code § 411.185.
IV. BENEFITS OF HAVING AN LTC

Perhaps most appreciated benefit of having an LTC is that an
LTC holder is allowed to carry at more locations than a Texas
Constitutional Carrier, which will be discussed in depth later in
this book. However, there are also other advantages to having an
