D. What is “printing,” and is it a crime?
If you have chosen to carry your handgun concealed in your shirt
or pants pocket instead of in a holster and it is “printing,” are you
committing a crime? First, printing is not a legal term, and printing
is not a crime. Second, the word “printing” does not appear in the
Texas Penal Code. “Printing” is a common street term. It generally
refers to when the outline or characteristics of a handgun become
visible under the clothing of a person. Imagine a person in a skintight spandex outfit who is carrying a full-size Glock 9mm pistol
under the outfit. The outline of the gun would be clearly visible;
however, since the gun is concealed by a layer of spandex, the gun
is still concealed. It may be boorish behavior, bad taste, or even
unwise, but under the plain language of the statute, it does not
appear to be a crime, and no Texas appellate courts have construed
printing to be a crime.
