Ammunition
• Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be
transported in checked baggage.
• Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or
empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided
case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements
governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as
defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
• Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding
.75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in
the same hard-sided case as the firearm.

B. May I have a firearm while operating or as a passenger in a
private aircraft flying just in Texas?
Generally, yes. For purposes of Texas state law, a private aircraft
is treated like any other motorized vehicle. For more information
concerning firearms in vehicles. See our earlier discussion in this
Chapter under Sections II and III.
C. May I have a firearm in a private aircraft that takes off from
Texas and lands in another state?
In situations where a private aircraft is taking off from one state
and landing in another, the law will simply view this as traveling
interstate with firearms. Where no other statutes apply to the
person’s flight, the person will be subject to the provisions of 18
