3. Weapons with barrels 12 inches or longer and lengths 18
inches or shorter
The definition of AOW also includes any weapon which has a
shotgun or rifle barrel of 12 inches or more but is 18 inches or less
in overall length from which only a single discharge can be made
from either barrel without manual reloading. The ATF identifies the
“Marble Game Getter” as the firearm most commonly associated
with this definition (excluding the model with an 18-inch barrel and
folding shoulder stock).
4. Pistols and revolvers with vertical handgrips
If a pistol is modified with a vertical grip on the front, it will now
be legally classified as an AOW and require registration and a paid
tax. Note: vertical grips are readily available and are legal to own
as long as they are not placed on a handgun. The definition of a
handgun is a firearm intended to be fired by one hand; the addition
of the vertical foregrip makes it so the weapon now is intended to
be used with two hands to fire. See 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(29). This
modification changes the weapon from a handgun to an AOW and
is now a prohibited weapon without the proper documentation. It is
not an SBR or SBS because it is not designed to be fired from the
shoulder. See 26 U.S.C. § 5845(e).
