Law enforcement officials are required to have reasonable suspicion
to detain you to inquire about your item’s ATF registration status.
If you do not have your paperwork with you, an officer could
very easily develop probable cause the NFA item is unregistered
because most state law enforcement officials cannot access the
ATF’s database of registered items. Once probable cause has been
developed, the officer has enough evidence to arrest you and see if
the district attorney will accept charges.
This is a long way of saying that it is a good idea to keep your
paperwork with you to prove compliance!
