B. Is there a difference in ammunition that is used in different
types of firearms?
Yes. Ammunition can be divided into two classifications:
ammunition for handguns and ammunition for long guns. Long
gun ammunition can be further divided into ammunition for rifles
and ammunition for shotguns.
Handgun ammunition means ammunition that is meant to be fired
from a handgun, and it comes in many different calibers. Rifle
ammunition is meant to be fired from a rifle and is similar to
handgun ammunition in that it comes in many different calibers.
Shotgun ammunition, on the other hand, comes in self-contained
cartridges loaded with some form of shot or a shotgun slug which
is designed to be fired from a shotgun.
C. What ammunition is illegal?
Armor-piercing handgun ammunition is the only ammunition that
has explicit prohibitions under both federal and Texas law. The
federal definition of armor-piercing ammunition is found in 18
U.S.C. § 921(a)(17)(B) and means “[1] a projectile or projectile
core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed
entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from
