E. Is it legal to use ammunition that works in both handguns
and rifles?
Yes, except for armor-piercing ammunition that is used principally
in handguns. This is because the federal and Texas definitions of
armor-piercing ammunition contemplate handguns only. Armorpiercing ammunition for a rifle is perfectly legal, though it may
complicate matters at trial in trying to demonstrate to the jury any
differentiation. Beyond armor-piercing ammunition, it is legal
to use ammunition that is available in common calibers and that
functions in both handguns and rifles.
